Chris Clemes has been working as a fly fishing guide in South Africa for some years, before coming to London to work for a major fly fishing company. After some time Chris grew disillusioned with the products that flood the mass market. He wanted to create something beautiful and unique.
Since the 1800´s English artisans were known for the making of some of the best split cane rods worldwide. But this art was dying. Only few were capable and willing to keep this ancient art alive. It takes up to 72 hours of manual labour and a huge amount of skill to build a split cane rod.
As a result of that Chris decided to bring together some of the remaining artisans, most of them 3rd generation rodmakers, to combine their skills and create a marketplace for the finest fly fishing tackle.
Unlike many other bamboo builders Chris doesn´t use machinery to split and plane the bamboo.
Every work step is done by hand.
A bamboo fly rod will give you a different feel than a graphite rod. The rod inherits a natural aesthetic that shows itself in the honey colour of the blank, the fine thread wrappings and the beautiful, handcrafted components. Also the knowledge that someone had to learn his craft for numerous years before he could build your rod will give you a great appreciation of it.
In the following we will present you a range of Chris Clemes fly rods.

The Symphony Series is a range of river rods with a classic varnished finish. The colour of the wrappings is maroon with black edging. These rods have a full flexing action which allow for gentle and effortless presentation, yet with plenty of power in the butt section for turning over larger flies. The grip is a reverse half wells.
The stripping guides are made of red agate and nickel. The fittings are snake guides in smoked nickel.
Chris uses wooden spacers, in this case walnut, that is usually used for gunmaking. The style of the reel seat is up-locking. The ferrules and the reel seat are made of nickel silver. Included is also a aluminium ,powder coated rod tube with cork inserts and a matching rod sock with the Chris Clemes logo.
They are perfectly suited for small to medium sized rivers, fishing dry flies and nymphs.
The rods are manufactured in the Chris Clemes workshop in London. They are made by craftsmen, most of them 3rd generation rodbuilders.
Each work step (also splitting and planing the bamboo) is done by hand.
